LONDON (Reuters) -- Queen Elizabeth II's Christmas broadcast will be posted on the Internet this year, according to Buckingham Palace.

While the queen's annual message to Britain and the Commonwealth will still be heard on radio and television, it also will be posted on the British monarchy's Web site (www.royal.gov.uk), which has proved immensely popular since it opened this spring.

That Web site will link to the Independent Television News (ITN) Web site (www.itn.co.uk) so users can access the audiovisual version of the message.

The broadcast, during which the queen will review 1997 and look ahead to the new year, will be beamed into British homes on Christmas day at 1500 GMT (10 a.m. EST).

Queen Elizabeth has shown a strong desire since the death of popular Princess Diana to update the British monarchy and build closer, less formal ties with her people.

Just last week, she admitted it was often hard for the royal family to interpret what the nation was saying, but she pledged to pay closer attention to the message.
